Beginnings

August 21st, 2005

In August 2004, Albert and I rode with my friend Chris across the West Country, from Bath to Henley. The trip was meant to be a sort of feasibility study for doing and End-to-End. I think we rode about 90 miles in two days. I remember being quite shocked at how hilly the West Country was—“undulating” took on a new, awful meaning. My main lessons from that trip were:

  • Don’t have the Full English Breakfast.
  • Don’t have the roast lunch.
  • Get a granny gear.
  • Don’t try the End-to-End yet.

We had originally planned for an End-to-End in March 2005, but I had taken this last point to heart. Now, in September 2005, we’ve got a bigger team (my wife Sophie and Albert’s friend Ed have joined us). We’re ready. Now we just need you.
